I’ve been DJing for 16 years and I just was recently introduced to Tech-House.
For the longest time, since ’97, I wasn’t into techno (I was booed off a set of TTs during a Berkeley Sorority party when I played some techno).

Since then I’ve been floating around the electronic genres and came across some whompy bass tracks, highly influenced by house and techno.

What can I say but, I LOVE IT!

Lately, I’ve been hearing about Fidget House. I love the sound of it as well.. Truth is, I just can’t distinguish the difference between the two. Can someone help me out and explain to me WTF is the damn difference!?!??
Please??

Confused,
Freddie Future

  1. hmm- i love both genres!

i’m generalizing here of course, but would say fidget tends to have that characteristic fast wobble-bass and micro sample stabs. usually has a lil bit more swing and funkiness to it (altho there is plenty of funky tech house too). tends to have more of a “fun” sound, and is related to indie-electro and electro-house.

tech house usually comes off as more mature, polished tones and textures to me. longer loops and energy builds. sometimes a lil more experimental, sometimes stripped down (but still denser than the average minimal techno track). more related to techno and some deep house.

maybe one of the Janky/TRBL djs can weigh in here?

  2. oh my….

fidget, at least the current stuff, is fun, cheeky, wonky and dirty……maximal (like electro house)

tech house is proper and sophisticated…. almost minimal…. it’s serious music that is..err, taken very seriously ;-) (like techno)

the line is blurry when you talk about guys like jess rose…. or riva starr….although they may have pioneered the “fidget” sound, i would not lump their production into fidget….

    top 5 fidget producers atm….
    kyle watson
    hot mouth
    scott harris
    stupid fresh
    shab ruffcut

    ask the pros ;-)

    got it ;-)

  3. I think you guys nailed it with the vibe. These days it’s pretty easy to mash up a sound/track given the technology. How much of this accessibility contributes to smaller variations in genres? Or perhaps it’s all in the evolution of musik- to base off 10 year old successful trends?

  4. And what about house? And fidget house? Is that the same?
