I’m hearing people say there were well over a thousand people who came through Public Works on Friday night, and honestly it felt like you were all there at the same time! When Slayers Club took the stage at 1:40 am, we saw a sea of smiles and familiar faces from 2 years’ worth of late nights and early mornings. Our marathon 4-turntable DJ set was one for the record books (we’ll DEFINITELY be doing that again!) and when the lights finally came on at 4 am there were still about a hundred heads going strong! THAT’s what I’m talking about…

With over 35 of us, we were a multi-dimensional balancing act with drinks and bass, surfing and flying through the San Francisco night. Rest stops in Treasure Island and the eastern waterfront, reminiscent of illegal urban outlaws as I watched angels give life to abandoned industrial playgrounds. Somewhere between lap dance orgies and the search for a modest enough place to pee, a sense of tranquility bestowed upon me.. and I wished it upon everyone I knew who couldn’t be there.

It turns out that not only is two-time DMC champ DJ Qbert the archetypal turntablist of this galaxy (and beyond?) but he is also a scholar and a cultured, compassionate gentleman. Somehow, between starting his own online DJ academy and playing benefit shows in the Philippines, he has found the time to launch a new gallery space at home here in the Bay Area:

“Our private gallery is based on a devotion to urban street art, sculpture and model figurines while showcasing DJ collectibles, custom equipment and rare vinyl records. I love the old school motown vibe that this track gives off. The vocal harmonies reminds me of the Temptations or some where along the lines of Chi-Lites. I love the rawness of the vocals as well. Pleasantly surprised that someone else at a sit-down restaurant knew about underground electronic music, I replied “yeah! Do you like dubstep?”

Which received an adamant “No! I don’t understand it at all! What is it that you like about that sound?”

Caught slightly off guard, I had to wing a response but was able to come up with something coherent. I began by saying that it’s absolutely essential to appreciate dubstep on a proper system with a subwoofer or two (or 20). Listening on anything less (god forbid, laptop speakers or iPod earbuds) means you’re missing out on much of the low end, which is a highly important part of the sound and intended impact. Good club systems can make the music feel like bliss; there’s nothing quite like that visceral impact when the subbass drops into your gut!

Next, I brought up that although there is a lot of bad, formulaic dubstep, there are plenty of gems to uncover as well (this happens to be the case with any electronic genre, really). And since dubstep has become rather popular of late, a lot of talented producers from around the world have been innovating the field from various stylistic angles (witness: dubtech, west coast sound, purple, etc).

Generally, I feel that dubstep still has a lot of creative potential because it is relatively welcome to strange new ideas, sounds, or reinterpretations of existing styles (drawing upon hiphop, jazz, techno, etc). Sure, it’s developed some fail-safe crowd pleasing tricks already, but the genre doesn’t rely primarily on these types of tracks. This can’t be said about certain other dance genres out there.

As the popularity has risen, it’s been nice to see more people of diverse backgrounds coming out to the shows. It’s no longer just dudes-who-don’t-dance standing in a dark room:

Nowadays, there are plenty of both boys and girls, and people have figured out how to dance to the music! Which brings me to one of my favorite aspects about dubstep, the simultaneous regular and double time feel (or half time depending on who you talk to). Not only does this allow for ingenuity in production, but it also encourages greater freedom of movement and expression. Imagine two rivers side by side, one flowing twice as fast as the other. Dancing to dubstep is like being able to jump between these two currents at will, with the faster one being bouncy and active while the slower one allows more spacious, flowing movements. Trying new ways to combine the two makes dancing to dubstep very fun and engaging!

Finally, as with every electronic genre, it’s up to the performers to vary things up. If you’re playing an all dubstep set, you better be thinking about how to create shifts in energy, mood, density, timbres, etc. Otherwise, it’s all too easy for the set to become static, causing people to lose interest and complain that dubstep is “boring”!

The occasion? Our good friend Marco (owner of Little Baobab and Bollyhood) lost his entire sound system to thieves a while back. We combined with Stay Human to throw a good old fashioned fundraiser for him. All told, we raised nearly two thousand dollars toward a new rig for Marco…knowing full well that we’ll get to rock it soon!

JMouse came over the other day to work on the remix we’re doing for Kush Arora. It was super early (noon) and we were both plumb tuckered from gigs the night before.

We were about to become super productive and make brilliant, amazing music that would forever change the course of blappy-moozic when one of my external hard drives died.

It ain’t a thang to a Slayer, though…we whomped our way around the obstacle with characteristic nonchalance.

The LovEvolution experience was nothing short of incredible. Besides the beautiful weather and our amazing friends, we had the luxury of a very diverse and ever-changing crowd! This freed us to really do something we love: bridge many genres and styles, spanning everything from glitch-hop to cumbia, dubstep to fidget and beyond. It also required discipline to prevent a stylistically incoherent clusterf**k, especially since we were taking turns on the decks in a 5-way tag-team! This meant we were constantly on our toes to function as a unit, paying extra attention to the preceding DJs before continuing a stylistic trend or taking things in a new direction. Factor in the madly swaying DJ booth and regular threat of power lines (open top clearance was 13 ft while some of the MUNI lines were as low as 14 ft?!) and that was no easy task!

Luckily, every one of us was on point and collectively all challenges were slayed. Yeahh team!! Things were made easier when Joe Mousepad lyrically lit the mic on FIRE with his diverse rhythms and choice words.

Going down the road from spinning real vinyl on turntables, to using Serato and learning CDJs, and now finally on to Ableton has had me thinking a lot about the role that music technology plays in DJing. A post by Anodyne over at glitchhopforum.com touches on this issue. The post is titled “hardware inferiority complex” and shows a video (posted below) demonstrating the possibilities with the AKAI APC40. For those of you who don’t know, this is a new midi controller designed specifically for tight integration with Ableton Live.

Anodyne comments, “Ok, so I’ve got a less than one year old Novation Remote Zero SL controller that I LOVE. But now I’m seeing people doing amazing things with the new APC and it’s making me feel like I’m just not cut out for performance anymore.”

The following is part of my response: “any controller is just a tool… while it may be true that the APC is easier to setup / use for what is done in this video, that isn’t to say you can’t accomplish similar with other hardware. and at the end of the day, if you’re having fun and the audience is feeling how you’re building your set (which takes into account *so many factors* beyond just hardware), then it doesn’t matter at all what you’re using.

there’s always a better drummer at the next club, and always a more ideal live setup. it’s often limitations that drive artists to new heights of creativity & invention, depending on your willingness to probe these limits. no need for inferiority complexes now, that’s just what the controller industry wants you to believe.”

After which Anodyne agrees & decides his issue was more of gear lust (perfectly fine in the music community!) rather than a “hardware inferiority complex”. Still, this brings up a bunch of interesting issues on the role of technology in music. Does the value of tech tools change depending on the audience? Do simple music fans or dancers care about shinier toys as much as fellow DJs, musicians or critics? What matters more, the strength of the tracks you play and sets you build or what equipment you use to do it? And how does playing original productions vs. other artists’ tracks weigh into this?

Given YOUR personal experiences and background with music, I want to hear your thoughts on all this.

When I was a kid, I would get so stoked about going to the local amusement park. Being a super-ADHD specimen, I wanted to simultaneously ride all the biggest rollercoasters, get on the rotor (gravity-defying wheel thing) and bumper cars while snarfing handfuls of fried dough, cotton candy and an XL slushy. Endgame was always the same: stained shirt, dazed expression and a goofy-ass grin on my blue teeth.

This Thursday, Slayers Club takes you back to that amusement park with our first out-of-town guest, JANTSEN of the Family Moons collective, from Boulder, CO.

JANTSEN has been repping his original glitch-crunk sounds hard as of late, recently releasing a track with BASSNECTAR and rocking the Half Moon Festival in LA. Prepare yourself for a set of remixes and exclusives from this fast-rising producer/DJ.

Also a low-end force to be reckoned with, ABSURGE brings a pre-playa blend of wonky treats to dismantle the dancefloor. …but people actually brought GLOWSTICKS! In fact, they were GIANT GLOWSTICKS! Now, as many of you know, this is a telltale sign that your club is really starting to blow up. I mean, next we’re gonna have some dude walking around saying, “Molly, doses, I got bomb press tabs…” or something.
